Term Projects

4th Term Project–ABC Book of Electricity and Magnetism
DUE FRIDAY, MAY 2

Students must make a an ABC book that includes a term or scientist’s name that begins with each letter of the alphabet and relates to electricity and/or magnetism. For each term or scientist’s name, students must write a brief definition and explanation as to the importance in electricity and/or magnetism. There should also be a graphic for each term.

Please refer to the project handout for additional instructions.

SCIENCE FAIR–3rd Term Project

Dear Parents,

All science classes are required to complete a science project and paper. Students should begin researching their topic and developing an experiment to test their research question. Students should use the scientific method as they plan, develop, and complete this project. The project must include a three-sided, free standing backboard and a research paper.

The science research papers are due on Tuesday, February 5 and the science projects are due on Tuesday, February 12. Students will give an oral presentation to the class, and the best projects will be selected and submitted to the school competition. The SFMS science fair is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, February 14.

I will take four grades from this project:
Homework grade — Project components turned in by the deadlines
Classwork grade — Display board
Test grade — Research paper
Test grade — Oral presentation.
As a result, this project will have a major impact on the third term science grade. Please support me in ensuring that your child takes this seriously.

You will find attached to this letter a set of papers that should help to simplify and explain the process. I ask that you read through this packet and discuss each component with your child. We have already gone over this in class, and we will continue to visit it throughout the project schedule. Please e-mail me with any questions and sign and return the bottom portion of this letter

Research Paper

    Follow the steps of the scientific method to develop your research paper. Label each part of your paper according to the following Paper Contents explained below. Remember that a paragraph is about 5-8 sentences.

    Paper Contents
    1. Introduction (1 paragraph): Write a general summary of your project.

    2. Ask a question (1 paragraph): The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that you observe: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why?
    In order for the scientific method to answer the question, it must be about something that you can measure, preferably with a number.

    3. Research (3-5 paragraphs): Rather than starting from scratch in putting together a plan for answering your question, you want to be a savvy scientist using library and internet research to help you find the best way to do things and insure that you don’t repeat mistakes from the past. As you research your topic, be sure to put the information in your own words as you include them in the paper. Do not plagiarize.

    4. Construct a Hypothesis (1 paragraph): A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work: “If I do this, then this will happen.”
    You must state your hypothesis in a way that you can easily measure, and of course, your hypothesis should be constructed in a way to help you answer your original question.

    5. Test your Hypothesis by Doing an Experiment (1-3 paragraphs): Your experiment tests whether your hypothesis is true or false. It is important for your experiment to be a fair test. You conduct a fair test by making sure that you change only one factor (variable) at a time while keeping all other conditions the same. You should also repeat your experiment several times (if possible) to make sure that the first results weren’t just an accident.

    6. Analyze your Data and Draw a Conclusion (2-3 paragraphs): Once your experiment is complete, you collect your measurements and analyze them to see if your hypothesis is true or false. Remember, scientists often find that their hypothesis was false.

    2nd Term Project–CREATURE FEATURE

    Create a Creature Adaptations Project
    Due Tuesday, November 27

    Project Requirements
    1. Study the Adaptations chart on the back of this paper. Choose one adaptation from each column. Create a chart like the one shown to list the adaptations you choose and explain how they help your organism to survive. Include the chart with the model of your organism.

    2. Use poster board, colored markers, picture cutouts, and/or craft materials of your choosing to create a model of your organism. BE CREATIVE! Remember to include your adaptations chart (from #1) with the organism.

    3. Now that you have designed your organism and decided on its adaptations, give it a two-part “scientific name” based on its characteristics and answer the attached questions about it. You may write your answers neatly in pen on the paper, or you may type your answers on a different sheet.

    4. Search for a list of endangered species and choose an organism from that list to research. Write a report that describes the organism’s habitat, niche and any special adaptations it has that help it to survive. Tell why it is endangered and what is being done to protect it. This report should be no longer than one page. It may be typed (double-spaced) or written neatly in pen.

    About My Creature

    Answer the following questions using complete sentences. You may write neatly in pen on this paper or type on a separate sheet.

    1. What is the two-part “scientific” name of your animal?
    2. What kind of animal is your organism? (mammal, insect, reptile, bird, fish, crustacean, etc.)
    3.What does your animal look like? (color, skin, eyes, etc.)
    4. What modern organism on Earth or ancient organism (now extinct) does your animal most resemble? Describe how they are similar or analogous.
    5. What does your imaginary organism eat? (Be specific.)
    6. In what environment or habitat would your organism be most likely to survive (desert, tropical rain forest, tundra, mountains, ocean, etc.)? Explain your answer.
    7. If a sudden climate change occurred, such as daily rain in a desert, or ice and snow in a tropical climate, would your animal survive? What adaptations might help it survive this change?
    8. Describe your animal’s niche. Include facts about whether it lives alone or in groups, whether it raises its young and how, whether it is a predator or prey, whether it is a carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, or scavenger.

    1st Term Project–”Whatta-Buncha Ologies”

    WHAT IS SCIENCE? The Branches of Science
    DUE: Friday, September 7

    As a part of this project, you will construct a poster using small matchbooks (we will learn to make these in class). These matchbooks should include the following information:
    –the name of the branch of science on the bottom flap
    –a drawing that represents the field of study on the top cover
    –a definition of the branch of science on the inside

    You must use each of the branches of science listed on the word list above and add six more to have a total of 15 represented on your poster. You can use the handout on -ologies, encyclopedias, or some other resource to complete this project.

    Use your creativity to find a title and a design for your poster. Please be neat and show your individuality. Use print only! Write in black pen and use colored pencils or crayons for your illustrations.
